Eagle Scout projects undertaken at St. Helena

Since 1990, a remarkable nineteen Boy Scouts with Troop 4 from Ann Arbor have earned Eagle Scout badges as a result of service projects undertaken at St. Helena Island lighthouse.

The Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America. The honor is considered so special that the
title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.” In order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Scout must already have earned a minimum of 21 merit badges, have demonstrated consistent Scout Spirit, and demonstrated leadership in the troop.

He must plan, develop, fund and lead a service project - the Eagle Project - that demonstrates both leadership and a commitment to duty. He must then take part in a Scoutmaster conference. After all requirements are met, he must complete an Eagle Scout board of review.

The projects these young men continue to undertake at St. Helena are remarkable in both their scope and complexity, as follows:

hosted a major restoration meeting at St. Helena. Jim Getty built and installed bat houses and osprey platforms. Jon Morrison built a 1/8-scale replica of the light station -  Chris Morison restored the station privy.

Jay Howe
built and installed a circular picnic table. Karl Koto designed, built and installed an information kiosk.

1994
Andrew Redies
restored the NE bedroom and dwelling eaves.

1997
Micahel Redies
designed and installed interpretive signs and bird houses.

1998
Jason Weaver
designed a St. Helena brochure and coloring book.

1999
Tom Laughlin
built shelving and a work bench in the north basement room -  Peter Wilson restored the summer kitchen - Steve Wise reconstructed the assistant keepers dwelling.

2000
Andrew Supiano
restored the dwelling office and built display cases.

2003
Spyros Pavlidis
built wooden walkways around the boathouse.

2005
Rile McCullagh
raised funds to purchase an automated defibrillator -  Daniel Vandermade restored the tin ceiling in the dwelling kitchen.

2006
Nick Yeatts
constructed the boat car trolley ramp to the boathouse - Andrew Wardner restored the interior of the lantern.

2008
Michael Saunders
restored the dwelling stairway.
