century square rigged sailing vessels carried these glass devices in order
to help in predicting weather conditions. Changes in atmospheric pressure
cause the liquid level in the sealed vessel to rise and fall, and the
likelihood of the nature of the resulting change in weather can be "read"
by how far the liquid rises up the spout. Gimbal-mounted on a mahogany
finished display plaque with instructions engraved on a brass cup which
